Policies and Guidelines for Students

First Time Students

A Note on Materials

All pastels are not created equal. Sometimes in my classes, students bring different kinds of pastels that they have purchased in different places. Some are exceptional finds and some aren’t suited for the velour paper surface that I use and recommend. For instance: an oil pastel is not the same as a soft pastel. In fact the pastel Society of America doesn’t even recognize them or allow them in their shows.

In my classes I try to use the best pastels that will do the job of creating a specific animal and to use just the right colors. Knowing what type of pastel to use and what specific colors blend together comes with experience. I recommend colors and brands to you in the materials list that I send out for each class. Getting the exact color and manufacturer I suggest will get you the superior results when you paint on velour paper and ensure a successful painting.

All first time students are required to purchase pastel kits.

Typical charge for pastel kits range from $50 – $80 which is our cost.  The pastels and pencils are yours to keep and  can be used for many paintings in the future.

A $100 non-refundable deposit is required from all first time students to secure their space in the class.  In case an emergency occurs and you are unable to attend, the deposit may be transferred to another workshop in the same calendar year, if space is available.

Alumni Students

After your first workshop experience, you may bring your own pastels to class, based on Kay’s color list or you may purchase kits from Kay, as needed.  Make your request for kit purchase a minimum of 3 weeks in advance, to avoid backorders.
